Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, white vinegar, vanilla extract, and purple food coloring.
  4. Gradually combine the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until smooth; then divide the batter between the prepared pans.
  5. Bake for about 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cooling before frosting.
  6. For the frosting, beat together softened cream cheese and butter until fluffy; gradually add confectioners' sugar.
